Apparently kicking people who are down is the Estonian national sport. In popularity this is followed closely by kicking people who are trying to get up.

The Estonian film Magnus by Kadri Kõusaar is the only film I’ve ever seen where half the IMDB reviews attack the writer/director directly instead of focusing on the film itself. And it’s not a bad film, really. As a prevention film it’s got the same basic structure as the much-celebrated Klass. Only Magnus is about suicide and Klass about school violence.

Oh and Magnus was banned in Estonia. Apparently the judge has some odd delusions, because the court’s decision is to ban the film not just in Estonia, but in the whole world [Europäische Union]. I had no idea its jurisdiction went so far. Or that judges can bluff like that.

The point of contention is that it’s based on a real life incident. With the actual real life Magnus’ father playing the father in the film. Trying to raise awareness of teenage suicide and maybe help prevent it in the future. Which is something you gotta give him credit for.
